There is a magnitude of marine life in the water around the Maritimes including cetaceans (i.e. whale, dolphin, or porpoise), seals, sharks, turtles and marine fish. Unfortunately, not all marine animals you encounter will be healthy. You may come across animals in distress – entrapped, entangled, sick, injured or dead.

When people see an animal that appears to be in trouble, the first impulse is to rescue it. This is not the best option for the animal or the person trying to help. These animals can be dangerous to touch or move and their reactions may be unpredictable. Only trained and authorized
responders should assist marine animals in distress.

Remember, it is common for seals to “haul out” on land to rest and give birth. Thus, not all seals which are found ashore are in distress!
